THE GROUP IN BRAZIL is on their way to the airport, but all Autumn can think about is this latest message from Norwood.

you hear right

Autumn had sent a sniping message hours ago, and this response surprises her.

you hear right

Autumn does not respond. She simply stares at it.

On the taxi ride to the airport.

At their gate before boarding.

On the hours-long flight.

you hear right

But she doesn’t respond.

Not yet.

Because what on earth could she possibly say?

SUMMER FEELS LIKE HER entire life is a stake out. This break between their third and fourth year at Whitmore has only been a few weeks so far, but has it really? Summer is certain that she’s been staking out consulates and airports and train stations and major points of interest for years, for decades—and she’s only just about to turn sixteen-years old, so that certainly can’t be the case.

The summer break, which initially stretched before her with so much goddamn promise, now feels like something of a broken record.

It’s not her Sisters’ faults though, Summer knows that. It’s not capture the flag, or the endless traveling, or even the suitcase lifestyle.

What it is, really, is that Summer feels like she’s changing, and she doesn’t really know what that means.

Back in Austria, Summer had felt the Whitmore Girl—had innately sensed that she was one of their Sisters, albeit one from a different team. Summer hadn’t seen her face, hadn’t recognized her from school, hadn’t even spotted the worn notebook that travels with the flag or the flag’s unmistakable colors. But she had known. And everything that had happened after that had simply been confirmation. Summer had pinged a random practically-stranger in an overly crowded marketplace as familiar, and her gut had taken it from there.

So what did that mean?

Even though Summer had ultimately lost track of the girl in the crowd, allowing the flag to slip through her fingers once more, her teammates decide to place her at a strategically situated terminal in the Gare du Nord. As one of the busiest train stations in Europe, there is a decent chance that the Doves might travel through here—if blending in at the market in Vienna had sort of worked, why wouldn’t this? Perhaps if Summer’s exceptionally keen eagle eyes had spotted someone once before, she could do it again.

But after two consecutive eight-hour stake outs, Summer refuses to respond to calls from Anna and Hayden to get back to the hotel, to rest and recuperate before going back out again the next day.

Which means she gets a cross-looking Anna showing up right in front of her face, practically dragging her from her post.

“We’re going in a different direction,” the Year Five says, her tone brusque.

“What does that mean?”

“I’ve been talking with Fay and Milena. We all need you to get some rest.”

“Rest?” Summer barks. “I’m perfectly fine.” Her bravado is made all the more questionable by the fact that she almost immediately scuffs her toe on the ground after saying this, stumbling oddly as a result.

“She says, practically tripping over her own feet.
