Chapter 15
Aboard the ship, Monica and Lotus found themselves escorted down a long hallway, surrounded by guards.
“Where are they taking us?” Monica asked softly.
“I don’t know,” Lotus answered, “but we may have been safer with the Parsnaak.”
“I doubt that. At least these guys are human.”
They entered a large room with a huge conference table. Seated around the table were a number of individuals that Lotus recognized, including Nicodemus, Ambassador Gourd, and Wreath, the media mogul. Only two chairs at the table were empty. A large number of comm screens were mounted on the walls.
Without warning, one of the guards sprayed a mist in Lotus’ face that sent him into a fit of coughing.
Nicodemus got up and helped him into one of the empty chairs; Monica sat in the other.
“Sorry about that, Gil,” Nicodemus said, “but you’ll understand the reason for it in a minute.”
“Told you…” Lotus gasped loudly, straining to breathe. “Not…Gilgamesh…”
As Lotus began to catch his breath, all of the comm screens came to life. Appearing on each of them was a man or woman. On the largest screen appeared President Evergreen, whom Lotus remembered meeting at the party on Muse.
“A pleasure to see you again, Mr. Lotus,” the president said. “Welcome. I believe you already know Nicodemus, Gourd, and Mr. Wreath.”
The three individuals identified nodded at Lotus, who said nothing.
“The rest of those you see assembled before you and on the monitors make up the High Council of the League of Planets,” President Evergreen continued. “You will forgive us for not being there personally, but for security reasons, only a select percentage of the High Council are allowed to physically meet at the same place at the same time. Members of the High Council, allow me to present to you Mr. Ian Lotus. Also known as Gilgamesh. Also known as Al Chronos.”
Chaos ensued as most of the councilors began to talk at once.
“What is this, a joke?” asked one.
“This is insane,” said another.
“You called an emergency session of the High Council for this?” asked a third.
The president called for order. “Quiet. Quiet, all of you.”
Slowly, the room calmed down and a sense of order returned.
“Now,” said the president, “I know how it must sound, but he is Gilgamesh…and Chronos.”
All eyes turned to Lotus, who looked befuddled.
“What are all you people talking about?” Lotus asked.
“You can stop pretending,” Gourd said. “We know who you are.”
“Of course you do,” Lotus agreed. “I met you only a day or two ago. I’m Ian Lotus.”
“Yes, you are Ian Lotus,” Gourd stated. “And many other men besides.”
Lotus looked at him in utter disbelief. “You’re insane.” He looked around at the people assembled, both in person and digitally. “Anyone who would believe a word of this would have to be mad.”
He turned to the newspaper owner. “Wreath, tell them how crazy this sounds.”
“Sorry, but I’m on their side,” Wreath said.
Lotus’ eyes narrowed as a revelation came to him.
“You brought the scorp-lion,” he said to Wreath. Lotus glanced at Monica, who lowered her head in shame, and then back at Wreath.
