Chapter twenty-three

Kendall

Grace said, “You’re kidding me?”

Kendall shrugged. “Why not? He’s a good guy, Grace, I’m telling you.”

Grace shook her head. “You sound like you’re still in high school! Nobody’s that great, Kendall. And need I remind you what he’s up to across the street, not to mention downtown?”

“Don’t be crass, Grace; it’s beneath you.”

Grace said, “It’s what’s beneath you that worries me.” She shook her head. “Or who.”

“Thanks for clarifying.”

“So first he chases off one cook, sleeps with the owner, now he’s gonna put one of his own behind the grill. Why don’t you just give him the keys and the deed? That’s quite a dowry.”

“Okay, Grace, that’s enough! I appreciate your point of view, and I know we’re friends, but I’ve had just about enough, all right?”

After a long, tense silence, Grace said, “Yeah, all right. And I’ve had just about enough too, Kendall. I guess I can do about two weeks more. Then… I’m out.”

“Okay, sure, fine. Go. I’m sorry, I’m not willing to let you crawl up my butt every other minute.”

“Maybe I wouldn’t have to if that weren’t where your head was.” Grace walked away, leaving Kendall with a sick, empty feeling. It was a bad blow to lose Grace. She had two weeks to turn that around, but the way things were going, Kendall wasn’t optimistic.

Could Grace be right? Is Noah just charming me? Is he worming his way in until there’s nothing left to fight over? Could he be that good? Could I be that gullible?

It wasn’t necessarily too late to change course. She could get Grace back on her side and prevent things from continuing to shift against her. But that didn’t feel right. Kendall knew she had to take a stand and stick to it, to make an executive decision. It was for others to follow or not to. That was the kind of confidence and certainty Noah brought with him to such decisions, and she knew his influence could only be a good thing.

It was time to grow up, to stop being Pismo Beach’s unofficial kid sister. Kendall wanted to be somebody formidable and not a sad little woman still mourning her parents and her late husband.

Recalling Noah’s sad tale about his own losses reminded Kendall that she wasn’t the only person to have loved and lost. She felt bad for feeling that she’d suffered more than others, and she had, but not worse than everybody.

After all, she hadn’t lost a child, and she wondered if she would have the strength to face such a loss, much less get past one. Considering how she kept focusing on her late parents, the man she’d lost, Kendall knew she had to refocus, not on the past but on the future. In that way, instead of being opposites, he was a wealthy and experienced traveler, and she was a humble small-town person; they were more like mirror images of one another. They were two lost, lonely souls who had found each other through sheer happenstance.
