Chapter Eight

He awoke as abruptly and wide-awake as if he had closed his eyes for just a few seconds. The pain was gone. Had there even been pain? For how long had he been passed out?

His eyes shifted when a small movement caught his attention. A slow smile tugged on his lips. “Khoe,” he said. “Didn’t I tell you not to sit on the console?”

The small woman on the cockpit controls tilted her head when he spoke. Her shape at first seemed a little nebulous but the longer he looked, the more she came into focus. The wild tangle of white braids surrounding an impish face, the odd assembly of clothes, the bare feet; all of it familiar as their memories put her together in front of him. Nothing about this seemed disconcerting, even when she slid off the console to float horizontally above his bench.

“Seth.” Her voice sounded as sweet as his memory of it.

“You remember.”

“I remember. Your ship does, too. It was easy this time. Does your head hurt?”

“Not now.” He glanced over the Dutchman’s displays. All systems had resumed their usual routines – apparently the ship had gotten over its objections to this strange creature invading its circuits and, from there, Seth’s brain.

She raised her hand to touch his face and it took just a moment for her to align their senses, allowing her to feel with his touch, just as she saw through his eyes.

“I’d forgotten how real this seems,” he said and watched his fingers run along her arm, feeling her skin and then the woven fabric of her blouse, knowing that all of this was simply an illusion. “How did you find me?”

She laughed. “You’ve been singing my song. I woke and there you were. The others are frightened by it. Did you know that?”

“I suspected.”

“So I came to see why you make such noise.” She smiled. No, he reminded himself. She let him believe that she had smiled, likely in response to something he wanted. Together, as before, they created her to suit them both. “It wasn’t easy! It felt like something was blocking me, but then I got through. Have you done something to your ship to keep us out?”

“Sort of. Not to the ship, though.” He sat up, feeling a touch of vertigo as he had before. Nothing else alerted him of the new presence inside his head, still busily using the cells of his own body to rebuild an entirely separate neural net. “Let me show you something.”

She followed him into the main cabin, walking although her feet did not touch the floor.

“Look.” He let his eyes travel over Ciela on the lounger. She slept with her hands tucked under her cheek, her loose shirt slightly bunched up, showing the pale skin of her belly. As usual on a long trip, she wore a snug, soft pair of shorts reaching only to mid-thigh.

“A Delphian,” Khoe said, whispering for some reason. Her voice existed only in his mind. “That’s what was blocking me.
