It was already dusk in the shadows. A spidery wisp of a questing touched the half-elf. Prone behind a crumbling red boulder amidst one of the many rock-strewn ravines fanning north and eastward of the Haunted Vale, Tallux cursed.

Silent as the imprecation, he fitted a shaft to the bow named Strumfyr by the elves of the Malave, and had been given into his hand by King Dryas himself. No other could bend it. The men of Ilycrium’s border scouts simply called it Farstriker. With the mighty weapon, Tallux could place a cloth-yard shaft into a palm-sized targe at two hundred yards whilst winging three others into flight before the first struck home. Tallux had augmented his camouflage with small sheaves of parched grass that bristled about his person, and daubs of clay to obscure the forestland colors of his garb that would have betrayed him amongst the wind-parched gullies. His concentration fell inward, weaving a subtle enchantment of concealment. A lone raven croaked in the still.

Tallux’s eyes hardened. The cold fingers of a powerful searching spell probed the evening gloom like a grasping hand. Sut growled deep in his throat. “I feel it as well,” Tallux whispered. “An unholy will guides this violating magic.”

He shared a look with the yellow-eyed hound. “As we have done many times before … you shall seek and flush our foe. Then I shall slay.” The massive hound nudged him and crept forth amongst the rubble. His pale form flashed briefly in the darkness. Tallux smiled grimly, fingering a taper-headed arrow whose enchanted steel tip would pierce any armor cast by man or elf. There was no doubt that his pursuer had (incredibly) managed not only to track the powerful hunting twain but to keep pace and now drive him to cover. Tallux ground his teeth. No more. The hunt ended here—in blood, as it always did.
