CHAPTER 15

Tippet, Louisiana

Becka was sitting on the edge of the couch beside Jack when John Duplin came walking in her direction. Pauline was shadowing him, and there was a look of uncertainty on her face. Even before either of them spoke, Becka felt like she was about to be double-teamed…about what, exactly, she had no idea.

“How are you feeling, Jack?” John asked.

“Better,” Jack said. The side of his head was slightly damp and reddened from the pack of peas he’d been holding there off and on over the past hour or so. “The headache is a beast and I do get a little lightheaded from time to time. But at least I’m functioning.”

John nodded as he looked back and forth between them. “Well, me and Pauline are going to head out to see if we can find you any acetomo-stuff the lady on the radio mentioned.”

“Acetaminophen,” Pauline said.

“What lady?” Jack asked.

Pauline frowned a bit and said, “The woman we spoke to on the radio a while ago. Remember? The woman at the lake…”

“Oh. Yeah…”

“Do you, really?” Becka asked, worried.

“I do. For real.” He smiled and took her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “My memory seems to be working perfectly well.”

“But hold on,” Becka said, her eyes now back on the Duplins. “We can’t let you do that. To go wandering around out there with things the way they are…”

John smiled and looked behind him, toward the window. When Becka followed his eyes, she saw that Brittany and Cam were both listening to them. They’d been playing War with a deck of Jameson’s playing cards on the living room floor but were now fully engrossed in the adult conversation taking place in front of them.

Still looking out of the window, Pauline said, “You forget how we ended up here, I think. We took Jameson’s call for help because we were out in the thick of that stuff, doing what we could to help those in need. And right now, Jack is in need.”

“Yeah, but she’s right,” Jack argued. “Going out there to look for medicine? That seems like a huge risk for such a small reward.”

“Your head hurts,” Pauline said. “You have a concussion. If we can get you some medicine to stop all of that so that you can be more present and comfortable with your family, I think it’s perfectly worth the risk.”

Becka had no idea how to respond to such kindness. It made her want to cry. To keep herself from doing that very thing, she found herself saying: “Then let me at least come with you.”

John laughed at her—an actual laugh of amusement and surprise. “I don’t think so. You stay here and help your husband feel better. Stay with your kids. There’s no need for three of us to go out there. Besides…we’ve got it at home, right in our medicine cabinet. It won’t be much of a hunt at all.”

“We’re just sixteen miles away, down a road we’ve traversed at least four or five times after the kudzu came along,” John said.
