Chapter 24

BUCKY

City Hall

Redemption, South Dakota

Bucky wasn’t much of a coffee drinker himself, but Meredith was fueled by it so they always had plenty in the house. Her need to hoard certain items was coming in handy, and he’d never tease his wife about it again. Such a simple thing, coffee, but looking around the city hall meeting room it was clear he’d been right to bring some.

“You’d think you gave us crack,” Kathy laughed as she closed her eyes briefly to inhale the wafting steam from her own mug. “It was a nice gesture. Thank you. And...thank you for bringing the cavalry last night. They made the difference in saving Trent’s house.”

Bucky looked over to where Trent was engaged in a lively conversation with Sergeant Scully, waving his hands as he spoke and then breaking out in a broad smile. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d seen the man happy.

“You can thank Gus for that,” Bucky said, gesturing to the back of the room. Gus was already back at his regular post. Sitting beside Ellen and working on some random radio apparatus, it was as if he’d never been missing. His relief at seeing the old man had been immense, and the fact he was riding in the front seat of a military vehicle with several soldiers was so very...Gus, that Bucky’s initial reaction had been to laugh.

“Can we get this meeting started?” Kathy asked, raising her voice and turning to address the rest of the room. “I have an overwhelming urge to go home and sleep for the next few days.”

“Oh! You have to be at the barbeque tonight!” Erica beamed. She and Ed were seated along one side of the long table with Javi, all three of them looking properly exhausted.

Most of the command team had been up all night. Between the fire, injuries, deaths, and a town on the verge of panic needing information and reassurance, it had been non-stop. With Scully insisting on a meeting as soon as possible, it had been easier to do it before they all scattered and went to bed.

Kathy glanced out the one window at the front of the room, which revealed an early pre-dawn sky. “I suppose celebrating our victory warrants another trip into town after I get a good nap in.”

“I don’t know if I’d call it a victory,” Derrik grumbled. “There’ll be others. We shouldn’t get too comfortable.”

Seated at the head of the table, Sage turned to glare at him, cradling her slinged left arm. She’d been abnormally quiet, and Bucky wondered if the doc had dipped into a secret store of pain pills for her.

“You might be right,” Sage said evenly. “It doesn’t mean we can’t take a few hours and allow everyone to breathe a little. And we need to eat. George was already butchering the cow for today, so we may as well take this opportunity to raise the morale around town and help reassure some people.
