Twenty Seven
We did a milk run before breakfast.
Jill started calling it the dawn patrol. And of course, when we all cancelled the inevitable popups without reading them, she had to explain it over breakfast. And then explain the two world wars fought on the newcomer homeworld which gave rise to flying craft in the first place. The scale of the devastation of those wars made me wonder how they’d survived to get out into space.
The arrow sent me to a briefing room, while the team went to the simulators again.
There were only two squadron leaders waiting there, both of whom greeted me warmly, and shortly after I sat, Eagle himself turned up.
“We’ve got a few minutes here to sort some things out, before we go into a larger meeting. Does anyone have any problems with what we discussed yesterday?”
No-one said anything.
“Anyone think a single Excalibur can’t take out a Trixone destroyer on its own?”
“Ours can,” I said. “The rest? Not a chance. They’ll only get themselves killed.”
“I wouldn’t even send them in against fighters at this point,” said one of the other squadron leaders.
“Agreed,” said the other, with me nodding.
“They won’t be,” said Eagle. “Not until they get strafing down, at least. No, I’m talking about our four squadrons. Can we handle destroyers without losing anyone?”
“No guarantees,” I said. “You can never tell. Sometimes the Trixone guess right, and kick the shit out of you faster than you think they can. But four seconds should make that difficult enough.”
“Right. If we make it a rule that no-one does another attack if they’re damaged or without full shields, that should be safe.”
“Slows down attacks,” said the first squadron leader.
“Yes, but time is not a factor here.”
I nodded. We’d more or less proved that.
“Anyone want to bring anything up?” he asked us. We shook our heads. “Fine. Follow me.”
He led us to a travel car, and we were taken to another level where the destination was a much larger briefing room. It was already in session, and full of no-one less than a full commander. In the front row were a number of one stars, including Admiral Jane. Eagle joined them, while the three of us, being the junior officers, took chairs at the back.
The man at the podium was someone I’d heard about, but never seen live.
“Welcome to our fighter contingent,” said Marshall Bigglesworth. “This is a planning session for a combined navy and fighter mission against the Trixone in one of the quarantined incursion zones. I’m heading up this session because everyone involved will be combat pilots. What they fly will only determine who hits what.”
He looked at Eagle, who nodded.
“The plan is to attack as many ships as we can simultaneously. Due to the way they are spread out at the moment, the titans are not practical for this attack. We have twenty dreadnaughts available, comprising twelve Chaos class, three Galactica class, two Goliath class, two Relentless class, and one John Wayne class. These will allow us to hit all the battleships and cruisers of a typical five fleet Trixone task force all at once.
