Another study looked at one hundred fifty fifteen- to thirty-five-month-old children (Lin, Cherng, Chen, Chen, & Yang, 2015). Of these, seventy five children were exposed to an average of more than one hour of television per day, while the other seventy five had no or infrequent television exposure. Children with frequent exposure to television had increased risk of delayed language, cognitive, and motor development. Additionally, the more time the children spent watching television, the longer was their developmental delay.

Some researchers suggest that perhaps watching television at an early age is an advantage. They argue that the SpongeBob and similar studies looked at just short-term effects. In the long term, such exposure may prepare the child’s brain to deal with the increasingly technological world they will face as adolescents and adults. Time will tell whether this notion or the concerns raised by the effects of television and other technology on executive function will result in a future advantage for today’s children. For the moment, it does not seem so.
