Chapter Twelve
QBBS Meredith Reynolds, Bethany Anneâs Personal Quarters
The General was waiting in the sitting room when Bethany Anne transported the four of them in. âOkay, now itâs weird.â She looked around at her old life and felt a pang of something she didnât want to examine too closely at the moment. She shook her head and held her arms out to her father. âHi, Dad.â
Lance hugged her tightly. âItâs so good to see you, sweetheart. How are my grandchildren?â
âWow, not even a segue.â Tabitha snickered at Lanceâs now-red face and waved for him to continue. âIâm kidding. Go ahead, get mushy. I need a shower and some clean clothes.â She grabbed her luggage in one hand and took it through to the bedroom. Lance looked at a suspiciously long and boxy bag she was carrying. âIs thatâ¦â
Tabitha held up a finger without turning around or stopping. âLeave Gracie out of it.â
Lance looked at Bethany Anne, nonplussed.
Jean rolled her eyes. âItâs a big-ass rifle she took off a Shrillexian in a bar fight on Devon.â
Lanceâs confusion deepened. âI thought it was called High Tortuga now?â
Bethany Anne shook her head. âNo, thatâs old Devon. Jeanâs talking about New Devon, which weâre just calling Devon since thatâs the whole point of taking the planet over.â
Lance rubbed his forehead. âIâm sure it will all make sense soon enough.â
Jean and Gabrielle excused themselves, leaving Bethany Anne and her father alone in the sitting room to talk. Lance raised his eyebrows.
Bethany Anne rolled her eyes. âThe twins are great, Dad. You only spoke to them a couple of weeks ago.â
They chatted for a while, catching each other up on the little details of life that were best exchanged in person. Tabitha joined them a short time later, followed by Jean soon after that.
Bethany Anne stood as Gabrielle returned with her hair wrapped in a towel. âPlease tell me you didnât use the last towel?â
Gabrielle grinned and shook her head. âPlenty left for you.â
Lance was distracted by an insistent beeping from his wrist. He looked down and made a pained face. âSorry, ladies. I have to get on a video conference.â
Bethany Anne craned to see what he was looking at. âOh, yeah? Is it something to do with the problem youâve been having?â
Lance pulled his sleeve over his wrist before Bethany Anne could see anything useful and leaned over to kiss her on the top of her head. âIâll tell you after dinner tonight. And no, I donât need you to butt in.â He ignored her pout. âJust donât take too long getting there, Patricia has been clattering around for days making⦠You know, Iâm not sure. She hasnât stayed still long enough to tell me.â
