Chapter 7

"How's the pizza?"

Lucas picked at the squishy yellow slugs with their bloated bodies that covered the sauce-soaked crust. "It's okay, I guess."

Dallis sighed then sat on the plasma bed. "I think we need to start this relationship on a different note. There were obviously some miscommunication issues on my part. That's my fault, not yours, pet."

"It's fine."

"No, no, it's not fine. The truth is, I've been watching you and studying you since you joined the Elysian military. I know many things about you, but I had no idea the kind of trauma you must have gone through to react the way you did earlier. Did the priests who cropped your ears harm you?"

"Yes."

"I see. I am terribly sorry that I scared you like that. I will never do those things to you. Look at me, pet. Lucas, look at me."

Lucas looked up from his half-eaten slice of pizza and into the four glittering golden eyes that were surprisingly accepting and amiable.

"You don't have to be afraid anymore."

Those words anchored into his mind and his soul. "Thank you, Dallis."

"No, don't thank me yet. Let me prove that to you." The blue-skinned alien reached out and unlocked the black collar around Lucas's neck. He removed it and tossed it onto the floor. "Just a cruel joke, pet. It wasn't going to hurt you. It was just a prank. I wouldn't have been playing around if I knew you were damaged."

Lucas bristled at that. "I'm not damaged."

"If something is damaged, it can be fixed. Notice I didn't call you weak. 'Cause you're not weak, Lucas. You're one of the strongest humans I've met. We will work through this together in the days to come. Right now, you need to eat. Then Powder will come in here and we will begin taking measurements for your alterations."

"Alterations?" Lucas asked. "Alterations for what?"

"Your exosuit. If you are no longer fighting on Elysia's side, then you need to look different than them. What do you say? I have some designs in mind that I think would make your armor be not only the weapon it is, but a super-charged armory of weaponry and aesthetic fear. Your mere presence on a battlefield will send your enemies running. I'll get rid of the sleek design, add some panels and horns, make you formidable like the ancient Biromian tribal warriors."

"Sounds good."

Dallis grinned as he placed his hand on the shoulder of Lucas's armor. "Is that a smile I see?"

"Maybe."

"Good. Keep it up. The universe can use more smiles."

There was steam wisping out from the top of the door to the bathroom when Rav entered the bedroom where Vance had been sleeping. As he got closer, he heard the sound of the shower pelting the tiles on the floor. He opened the door and stepped into the humid room. A man's shadow moved slightly behind the white shower curtain. "Vance? Are you feeling any better?"

The voice from the other side of the shower curtain was empty, raspy, and hollow.
