The workshop was through several tunnels, up a flight of concrete stairs that had been an addition at some point, and finally out to an old warehouse’s sub-basement.

They’d put up extra supporting columns and had a few fans piping in fresh, albeit unheated air. As Barowe and the two sentries walked between parked vehicles toward Fujita’s voice, he saw a few of the mechanics in the workshop just as heavily clothed as they would be outside.

Fujita stood with one of the cannons on his shoulder among a group of grease monkeys. He was looking down its scope. Behind him, Cynthia had a hefty fuel cell on her own shoulder. Twin cables ran from it into the electrical inputs of the weapon.

Fujita panned the cannon around the room to point it at Barowe and the sentries. They hit the deck, to the laughter of the others. Fujita lowered it and walked backward, careful not to pull the cables free while Cynthia sat the fuel cell on a workbench. He placed the cannon on the table like a parent gingerly lowering a newborn into a crib.

“Does it work?” asked Barowe.

“Of course it does,” said Cynthia. She flashed her pretty ivories at Fujita.

“Cynthia did it,” said Fujita. “Now we just have to share the good news.”
