Chapter 18

Nine days to party

True to Delaney’s word, there was a medical team with a neurosurgical consultant along for the ride. Kim was taken away, strapped to a stretcher with blocks either side of his head keeping his spine aligned, and Tara only had time to offer him a fleeting smile of reassurance before she, Ramona, and Clayton were whipped away into the night.

“You think that’s enough?” Illya asked beside Odell, giving voice to the exact concern at the forefront of his thoughts.

“No. Not if they need more, but ain't that always the way?”

Illya bobbed his head from side to side in the curious way he did when he was allowing someone had a valid point.

“Still, would one more make difference?”

Odell made a similar gesture with his own head, only adding a facial expression that looked more Robert DeNiro than anything else.

“Not if it doesn’t,” he breathed tiredly. “Screw it. Either way you look at it, we don’t have enough shooters, so we make do with what we got.”

He turned away from the darkness where the flashing lights of the ambulance had faded far into the distance with a slap on Illya’s shoulder that failed to move the man an inch.

“Got Delaney on,” Ryker called out, waving Odell back to where the plane had come to a stop and unloaded them and their gear before taxiing further away to fulfill its real purpose of pretending to unload a faked cargo manifest.

“Patching into comm,” Ryker said before Odell’s earpiece came to life.

“…in the air as of about forty minutes ago. I don’t know the exact details, but they’ll get refueled in the air by the Brits a few hundred miles west of Ireland then turn southeast after that before they land at USAG Wiesbaden.”

“Veeswhut?” Tamar asked.

“Wiesbaden,” Ryker told her. “United States Army garrison, and probably the weirdest Italian restaurant I ever ate at. You been there?”

It took Odell a second to realize the question was aimed at him. He shook his head to respond and to clear the fog.

“Nah, man. Ramstein a few times, but I don’t think I’ve been through there.”

“Little Italy, not exactly inventive… last time I tried to go there, it was closed. On a Saturday of all things, you believe that?”

“ETA to the refuel is about an hour and ten, so I’d expect them to be in Germany in two to two and a half.”

“Thanks, Delaney. Do we go to them to collect or are they bringing it to us?” Odell asked.

“I’m told they’ve got a chopper on standby to bring it right to your location. I’m not sure who called in what favor here, but pretty much all of NATO pulled out the stops to get that gear to you.”

“Yeah, probably easier to find it over here, right? I mean, if they can spare a mid-air refuel, they could probably find the gear we needed…” Ryker said, unable to keep a grin of amusement off his bearded face.

Odell recognized the effects of stress and exhaustion in his friend’s behavior, and he placed a reassuring hand on his back.
