“I don’t like the way he looks at you.”

Asher himself was doing a pretty good job of looking at me. Or, more accurately, scowling, arms crossed, leaning in the doorway of one of the many vacant bedrooms we’d taken up temporary residence in. I tried to ignore the burning way his gaze traveled across my skin, but felt my cheeks flush all the same. “Do I detect a hint of jealousy?”

“It’s not jealousy to be concerned. The guys a…he’s not what I expected.”

That made three of us. Maybe even four. I got the hint Mia hadn’t even been aware it’d been her brother that’d called on her.

Even if Asher insisted it wasn’t jealousy, another part of me was secretly happy at his concern for me. It might have been petty and unwarranted, but at least I wasn’t the only one who felt somewhat possessive. But I knew he had nothing to worry about. Every look Nolan gave me had been filled with grim fascination, nothing more. There was no spark of interest, just someone who’d found a kindred spirit when they thought they never would.

Asher flicked his finger. The sheets I’d been pulling from one of the wardrobes slipped out of my hands and settled on the down mattress. Another flick and they arranged themselves into neat folds.

“Thanks,” I said.

“I know you didn’t want to turn him in at first because you think this guy could…I’m not sure, teach you? Become your mentor? But, Skylar, this guy? He can’t be it. He’ll be nothing but bad news.”

“He’s Mia’s brother. She supposedly trusts him, and I trust her.”

“A brother she hasn’t seen in a long time. Who knows how much he’s changed since she saw him last.”

That was the question, wasn’t it? I knew so little about their relationship, about my best friend’s past. Both things I needed to change. Especially since, yeah, I was hoping to have Nolan teach me something about his god powers. During the fight, he’d exhibited a level of control over them that I lacked. At least, it hadn’t seemed he was in any danger of them consuming him.

“I’m not sure what he can do,” I admitted. “But my magic responded to his. And there’s something about this valley, something in it that the Dark Prince reacted to.”

Asher’s brow furrowed. “Something like what?”

I closed my eyes, conjuring up the magic trail. I could see the faint outline of the mansion it’d led to. Though I didn’t have any clearer picture of it, it was still something to check out later.

“Just…something. I’m not sure. I’ll know it when I feel it. But we should wait. I think Nolan isn’t as bad a guy as we think. At least I hope so.”

I patted Asher’s chest. “I’m going to talk with Mia.”

He caught my arm, the strength in his grip bringing me to a halt. “I don’t like this.”

“What don’t you like about it? Is it really Nolan you’re worried about?”

“Of course it is! What else would it be?”

I remembered the way he’d acted when the Dark Prince had flared up.
