Elle met them at the door of the townhouse she shared with Elara. Her eyes were red-rimmed. âThere you are!â She held the door open as Ben guided her sister inside. She stood barefoot in the entryway, her gray yoga pants and pink crop top rumpled from sleep. The messy bun her dark hair was twisted into was starting to come down.
âAnd you are?â she demanded, planting her hands on her hips and facing Ben.
âOne of the guys she works with.â
âWhatever!â Elle snorted as she took in the possessive way he was hovering over Elara. âWhatâs all this I hear about a horse kicking my favorite second-oldest sister?â
âJust a freak accident. It couldâve happened to anyone.â Elara tried to make her voice sound off-hand but wasnât sure if she succeeded. She didnât want to talk about herself. She was far more concerned about Elleâs safety right now.
âAre you going to be okay?â Elle gripped her shoulders, peering anxiously into her face, as if needing to see for herself.
âOnly the good die young.â Elara swatted away her sisterâs hands. âYes, the horse went nutso, but he didnât get in a direct kick. It was more of a side swipe, which resulted in barely more than a scratch.â
âRight.â Elleâs dark gaze roved doubtfully over the white bandage on her temple.
Before Elara could say more, they reached the living room.
âSit!â Elle commanded. âI have a pot of tea brewing.â
Elara gratefully sank atop their comfy brown suede sofa, a hand-me-down from their parents.
Benâs cell phone buzzed with an incoming message. He scanned its contents. âYouâve got to be kidding me,â he muttered.
âBad news?â Elara asked quickly.
âYes and no. The B&B is being overrun with business, it seems.
Elaraâs eyes widened. âI fail to see the downside of that.â
âTheyâve issued an SOS for all hands on deck.â
âGreat! Iâm coming with you.â She started to push to her feet, but he stopped her with a dirty look.
âDonât even think about it, Miss Corrigan. We can manage the Haradas for one day without you. And the Taniguchis,â he added in a rueful voice.
âWhat?â she gasped.
Shaking her head at them both, Elle disappeared through the door leading to the kitchen.
âIâm as surprised as you are.â Ben waved his phone at her. âAccording to Matt, the Haradas are extending their stay until the clinicâs grand opening, and the Taniguchis are on their way into town for the same reason. They made the reservation a few minutes ago. Iâm not sure why my dad and brothers didnât contact me directly.â
âMaybe because they wanted to surprise you,â she suggested softly.
âI hope thatâs all it is.â
Her thoughts raced. âPlus, we have our first rodeo rehab group converging on the ranch at the same time, and thatâs in addition to our regular guests.â Random vacationers, folks on weekend getaways, and such.
âYep, itâs going to be a pretty full house, babe, but we have the space at the B&B. From what I understand, itâs as close as theyâve ever been to being booked solid.â
âDo we even have the staff to handle those kinds of numbers?â
He shrugged.
