Elle met them at the door of the townhouse she shared with Elara. Her eyes were red-rimmed. “There you are!” She held the door open as Ben guided her sister inside. She stood barefoot in the entryway, her gray yoga pants and pink crop top rumpled from sleep. The messy bun her dark hair was twisted into was starting to come down.

“And you are?” she demanded, planting her hands on her hips and facing Ben.

“One of the guys she works with.”

“Whatever!” Elle snorted as she took in the possessive way he was hovering over Elara. “What’s all this I hear about a horse kicking my favorite second-oldest sister?”

“Just a freak accident. It could’ve happened to anyone.” Elara tried to make her voice sound off-hand but wasn’t sure if she succeeded. She didn’t want to talk about herself. She was far more concerned about Elle’s safety right now.

“Are you going to be okay?” Elle gripped her shoulders, peering anxiously into her face, as if needing to see for herself.

“Only the good die young.” Elara swatted away her sister’s hands. “Yes, the horse went nutso, but he didn’t get in a direct kick. It was more of a side swipe, which resulted in barely more than a scratch.”

“Right.” Elle’s dark gaze roved doubtfully over the white bandage on her temple.

Before Elara could say more, they reached the living room.

“Sit!” Elle commanded. “I have a pot of tea brewing.”

Elara gratefully sank atop their comfy brown suede sofa, a hand-me-down from their parents.

Ben’s cell phone buzzed with an incoming message. He scanned its contents. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” he muttered.

“Bad news?” Elara asked quickly.

“Yes and no. The B&B is being overrun with business, it seems.

Elara’s eyes widened. “I fail to see the downside of that.”

“They’ve issued an SOS for all hands on deck.”

“Great! I’m coming with you.” She started to push to her feet, but he stopped her with a dirty look.

“Don’t even think about it, Miss Corrigan. We can manage the Haradas for one day without you. And the Taniguchis,” he added in a rueful voice.

“What?” she gasped.

Shaking her head at them both, Elle disappeared through the door leading to the kitchen.

“I’m as surprised as you are.” Ben waved his phone at her. “According to Matt, the Haradas are extending their stay until the clinic’s grand opening, and the Taniguchis are on their way into town for the same reason. They made the reservation a few minutes ago. I’m not sure why my dad and brothers didn’t contact me directly.”

“Maybe because they wanted to surprise you,” she suggested softly.

“I hope that’s all it is.”

Her thoughts raced. “Plus, we have our first rodeo rehab group converging on the ranch at the same time, and that’s in addition to our regular guests.” Random vacationers, folks on weekend getaways, and such.

“Yep, it’s going to be a pretty full house, babe, but we have the space at the B&B. From what I understand, it’s as close as they’ve ever been to being booked solid.”

“Do we even have the staff to handle those kinds of numbers?”

He shrugged.
