Lucky

A creepy, faceless man loomed over me. His fingertip brushed against my arms, moving up, slowly and deliberately, like connecting points on a map. He’d never touched me before, had only stared—at least, that was what it felt like. A haze filled the room. It seemed to strategically float to keep me from identifying or recognizing anything. I’d always try to get away, but he’d pin my wrists and ankles to the bed beneath me. Like usual, nothing physical bound them, but I couldn’t move an inch.

When his thumb pressed into the crook of my elbow, I screamed and arched my back, as if that could stop him. He pulled away abruptly but then continued. The panic pumped my heart into speeds that couldn’t be healthy.

“Please, leave me alone.” I tugged at my restraints, but nothing would budge. Tears trailed down the sides of my face.

“Liam! Where are you? I need you.”

A cold, angry darkness replaced the fog and threatened to swallow me whole.

“Liam!”

“Lucky! Wake yourself, Lucky.”

Little hands patted my face, and I bolted upright, wondering where I was. Patty knelt at the bedside, his eyes frightened.

Oh yeah. I shared his room last night.

I scrubbed my eyes and combed back the hair from my face. After my argument with Liam, Patty had knocked on my bedroom door because he’d somehow sensed that I needed him. I’d followed him back here to escape and hid behind my second block to keep Liam from finding me. I’d obviously cast it off during the night. It was a good thing I’d finally figured out how to do it though—without losing my memories or my empathic abilities.

Who would blame Liam for being pissed? I wouldn’t. I should’ve acted like an adult and taken the time to at least hear him out. And yet, I still hadn’t dropped my regular block—a clear message that I wasn’t in the mood to talk. Besides, I didn’t know what to feel right now. Only time would help with that. Then we could hash it out.

I wanted to crawl back into Patty’s superhero bedsheets and mope.

“Was it a nightmare?” he asked.

I nodded, unable to keep the images from stoking the fear I’d felt. I inhaled deeply and pushed away the emotions. I’d been having “uneasy” dreams for several days now—triggered by stress, no doubt. I really needed to relax.

“Da always makes me cocoa when I have one,” Patty said. “D’ya want me to ring for some?” He pointed to the elaborate electronic call system by the door.

“No thanks.” My voice was hoarse. I looked at his Avengers bedside clock. It was after eight thirty. “Don’t your lessons start soon? Did you already eat breakfast?”

“I have, and Aunt Caroline knows I’m here, but you’ve not eaten, so c’mon.” He took my hand to lead me downstairs.

“That’s okay,” I said, giving him a warm smile. “I’m not hungry. Besides, I have to shower and change.” I wasn’t quite ready to face Liam.

“You’re still not wanting to see Liam?”

“How do you know?” I threw my legs over the edge of the bed.
