Chapter 14

A few police cruisers with their sirens blaring flew past me a couple minutes after I left the junkyard. I was sure that Arno had some smooth-talking way of sending the pacers scurrying back to their cruisers. Worrying about whether or not a crime lord could fool the cops was not normally something that entered my mind. But I promised Arno I would find the wizard that possibly killed his brother. I keep my promises.

I squeezed the wheel with both hands. A wizard sent a daemon after me. Goddamn wizards. Even the rogue ones are a pain in my neck. I dug into my coat’s inside pocket and pulled out a cloth lined with runic symbols. My wizard insurance; I might be needing it soon. I put it in my left pants pocket for easy access. I was sick and tired of being afraid or worried every time there was a twist in the case. It was time to take control again. I parked the car and jumped out.

I sat against the car’s hood and watched my breath become visible in the chill air. It wasn’t uncomfortably cold yet, but it was noticeable. I was reminded of Jack of Frost’s job, wishing there was more I could put into it before the city froze. Instead, I pushed myself off the hood and walked into a nearby alley.

It was mostly empty, save for a few trash bins and dumpsters. I just needed a place where I could focus and talk to myself without drawing attention. It didn’t need to be pretty.

I flexed my fingers and took a few deep breaths. The facts.

“Five companies have viruses in their systems,” I started. “The virus was put there by Milos Ravinich who was hired by Helga Dubois of Orion Industries, Glowing Future’s biggest competition. Milos also said Helga had him put the virus in Orion’s system, though.” I played with the idea of knocking down Helga’s door, but thought better of it. I didn’t want to go storming in with half-information. “Warren seems to believe the virus isn’t doing anything but moving files and being a nuisance. However, hidden in the code was a video file showing images of gluttony, probably some tribute to this Obasin thing.

“Then there’s Obasin himself. There is no mention of him in folklore when I looked, but he has at least one faery devoted to him, probably Helga as well. Then there’s this wizard that is trying to kill me.” I paused. “Or hell, maybe with my luck a daemon did just decide to take me out and there’s no wizard at all. But that’s more worrisome — and nearly impossible — so I’ll stick with the wizard.”

I paced the alley without a word, occasionally knocking the wall with my knuckles absentmindedly. Nothing was quite piecing together. I still didn’t know who wrote the virus. It wasn’t Milos; he was a grunt at best. It wasn’t Helga; Darklings weren’t known for their intricate computer skills, neither were CEOs. There was a third player involved.
