If short-termism is one of the reasons for the lack of retirement preparedness, how is retirement actually playing out today? And what can you learn from the experiences of current retirees as they transition from the workforce?

A good place to start is the 2017 HSBC study I referred to in Part 2, titled ‘The Future of Retirement: Shifting Sands’. The study is based on a global survey of more than 18,000 people in 16 countries, including 1,000 Australians. The report explores the way the ageing population, rising healthcare costs, and record low interest rates are affecting the retirement plans of people around the world.

Here are some of the key findings of the working-age people surveyed:

58 per cent say they will continue working to some extent in retirement.
