“Oh. My. God!” Malory screamed when we entered the club. She was tucked into the corner cuddled up with Lucky. Red and white balloons filled every inch of the ceiling. Their long ribbon tails bounced in time with the bass of the music. Apparently, all of Spring Valley High was here; wonder kids and non-wonder kids alike. Malory launched out of the booth and surfed her way to A.J. and me.

“Come sit with us.” Malory pulled my elbow as A.J. waved to the booth of wonder kids across the room.

Olivia was there.

“Did you win?”

“Do you see a crown on my head?” Malory faked a pout, but I knew she was disappointed, if not heartbroken. “Didn’t even make the court.”

“Hey A.J.,” Olivia walked up and adjusted the crown on her head. “Can you believe it? Crowned Queen of Hearts.” She looked at me and then winked at Malory.

“It’s okay, Malory.” Cara did the pity tilt that made me just wanna kill someone. “There’s always prom court.” She patted Malory’s shoulder and I wanted to rip Cara’s arm out of her socket.

“No crown, Cara?”

“Not this time around.”

“Maybe not ever.” A small patronizing pout pulled at my lips.

“Sorry sweet cheeks, Mom’s still sending me to Malaga to prepare for next year’s Tournament. Looks like that title is still mine, so I won’t be here for prom.” Cara turned on her heels and marched back to her table.

“We’ll save you two a seat,” Olivia said, as she turned to follow Cara, the invitation-only didn’t go unnoticed.

“You should go.” Malory sucked in her bottom lip and turned back to her booth on the opposite side of the club.

A.J. laced his fingers with mine, waiting for a decision that was impossible to make. My friend or a vote for my life.

“You know if you don’t go…”

“I know.” My stomach clenched. I watched Malory’s shoulders slump a bit more as she looked back and saw we weren’t behind them.

“C’mon.” A.J. pressed his lips to my forehead and pulled me toward the wonder kids table.

A small divide wedged ahead of us as we pushed through the sea of kids from school. A.J.’s presence and popularity was tangible, but unlike the kids at my old school, A.J. was oblivious to the fuss he caused.

The music died down the further we got from the dance floor until finally it was accent music instead of ear piercing sound. Gio saw us coming and got up and out of his bar stool.

“Here, you can have my seat,” he said to me. Cara rolled her eyes as Olivia smirked again. I didn’t have to look at A.J.’s face. The tight, possessive grip he had on my hand said he was less than pleased with Gio’s gesture.

“Glad you dressed for the occasion.” Cara nodded her head at me and my black wool pants.

“If you mean a dinner date with A.J., then you’re welcome.”

“Play nice,” A.J. whispered in my ear. He eased my coat from my arm and hung it on the post next to booth.
