CHAPTER 25 - The Morning After

Megan opened her eyes; her brain took several seconds to adjust to the light, or lack of it. The only source of illumination, an oil lamp in the corner of the room.

Her head thumped as she attempted to piece together the previous evening's events. She remembered the servants replenishing the jugs of wine several times. She gingerly lifted her head. There was someone in the bed with her, was it Hugh? The long dark hair told her otherwise. At that moment Megan realized she was naked.

A hand brushed against Megan’s hip, and she snapped her head around. The pain shot through her skull as the pretty face of Abria greeted her. A wave of panic washed over her; was Abria also naked? Had they . . . done anything?

Megan jumped out of bed and for a second, stood still. In her rush she'd forgotten about being naked. Abria looked her up and down; smiled and pulled the covers back. She was also naked.

Megan stood, frozen to the spot. A tiny, curious part of her wanted to get back into bed. If they had done something the night before it didn't much matter. She'd been so wasted she had zero recollection. She wondered what it had felt like?

Megan took a step forward, but a soft tap on the door halted her.

"Megan," a voice hissed. It was Hugh. Megan searched around for her clothes; they were scattered at the foot of the bed in a suspiciously haphazard fashion.

She threw everything on and opened the door a crack.

"Are you ready? He asked. We have to go, don't you remember?" His voice was barely above a whisper.

"Thanks to the quantity of that damned honey sweetened wine I consumed; I don’t remember much of anything."

Hugh chortled. "Is Abria awake?"

Megan nodded and glanced over her shoulder. Now fully dressed, she headed over, and with a smile pecked Megan on the cheek and the two them followed Hugh.

Dafydd stood waiting for them at the end of the hallway connecting the rooms. He had a bundle of rags in his hands.

"Finally; I was wondering if you'd ever arrive. They change the guard at dawn. I want to catch the night guards at the end of their watch."

He handed Megan and Abria a bundle each. They were clothes, but a far cry from the lovely, white linen dress both of them wore.

"Switch clothes," Dafydd said, rather sharply.

"What, here in front of you?" Megan asked.

"Oh, for the good Lord's sake. Hugh, turn around."

Megan stripped and redressed as quickly as possible.

So, with Abria and Megan looking like peasants and Hugh and Dafydd dressed as Roman soldiers they headed for the gate, and hopefully beyond that the harbor.

"Halt." The shout was firm and authoritative. So much for Dafydd's theory about catching the night shift off-guard.

With a look of disdain, the guard pointed at Megan and Abria. "Where are you taking these two?"

"We are hitching a ride on one of the boats heading west. They are to work in Canovium.
