Partition 27

Using the first rays of light to guide the way, we set off south. The sun was also our only guide for direction. While not accurate, it would serve well for the first couple of hundred miles or until we reached the road.

We all carried as much grilled snake meat as we could, which allowed us to avoid any beasts at all. I didn’t care if they were F Rank right now, I just wanted to cover ground and break down the distance to Artem.

The closer we got to the city, the fewer big monsters we’d face as they’d already been culled. But that didn’t mean that A Rankers didn’t still wander into the city zones either. With that being said, we were still a long way from where that would make any difference to our safety.

We stopped traveling around noon when the sun became unbearably hot. Finding shade in a little patch of dry woodland that nestled in the shade of tall outcropping. Once settled in to rest for the hottest hours of the day, we had the Water Generator working overdrive.

A few hours into our break, Nozz, whose turn it was to keep watch on the border of the trees, came back to our little clearing.

“Military recon drone just whizzed by a few miles to the east. Nothing to worry about, but just a heads up that I saw one.”

“I wonder if it’s looking for us or for more A-Rankers to harvest,” Lanris said.

“Both,” was my obvious answer. “We need to be really careful about the drones spotting us. Right now, I’m more worried about them than the monsters out here. I’d be tempted to travel at night if the place wasn’t so damn inhospitable.”

We waited there for another couple of hours before risking moving again, and this time, we walked long into the night.

With the geodome, it was easy to stop when we were ready, but I still looked for decent defensive positions, preferably where we could get a couple of approaches blocked.

The second morning while traveling, we encountered an Arachnid nest. It was around midday when we planned to stop, but once the black mass of hungry giant spiders saw us, they soon put a stop to that.

“Let’s get to that ridge in the east,” I barked. “Keep gunfire to a minimum. We don’t want to draw any more attention to ourselves if we can avoid it.”

Together, we bolted across the hard-packed land. A quick glance back told me we were being closed down steadily, but not by all of them. Only half of their number had bothered to follow.

“Say the word,” Nozz said desperately. His rifle held ready to use.

“As soon as we shoot, the rest of them are coming after us. We really don’t need that.” As I spoke, an idea popped into my head. “You think they’d attack the Geodome?”

“Probably. They’re monsters,” Nozz replied.

“Can it withstand their attack?” Theta asked.

“It’s not ideal,” I said with a wince. “And I really don’t want it damaged if I’m wrong.
