Chapter 12

Korbin‘s core shattered.

His entire being was washed in Aether as the saturation in his body reached its peak.

Every cell in his body screamed.

Pain was the dominant feature on his mind, and it was embracing his entire being like a blanket. There was no escape, there was only the Aether and the pain.

The moment lasted an eternity, and didn‘t. Time was incomprehensible as everything of Korbin‘s being was washed in pain.

His memories, his entire identity, everything was meaningless in that moment.

Then the words came.

The litany of pain.

I will embrace the pain and remember myself.

Now that was a tall order. Wasn‘t pain everything? But there were pictures, smells. Vanessa. Do it for her. God hates a coward. Korbin. His name was Korbin Alister, bloody Knight of the bloody Round.

Pain is the false master, and the only master of myself am I.

No need to stop now. That stubbornness, he remembered it well. He grit his teeth. Or he thought he did. Hard to tell.

Beyond the pain lies my future self, unbound and true.

What did lie in the future? His self? Unbound? True? The words were there, and he grabbed them. He knew exactly what his future held.

Through my pain, my chains are broken.

Time to get a grip. Pain. It meant nothing. He had places to be. Time to wield that stubborn mind of yours like a runeblade and strike through the pain.

The pain will shed its light and my mind will pierce through the beyond.

There is the body. That handsome smirk. Do it for her. She‘s the light. She‘s what‘s beyond. Her and what grows within.

And when the pain has passed, through its sacrament, I will be reborn.

Atoms. Molecules. Fairy dust of the stars. Come all together and heed my call. Give shape to thought, I command thee thusly. Or so.

Beyond the pain, only my true self remains.

Korbin opened his eyes and for a moment the universe seemed to skip a beat. His glowing eyes flashed brightly as his irises crackled with blue energy and wisps of Aether escaped his mouth as he exhaled. Everything was calm inside him, then his core clicked one last time. Suddenly Korbin felt the energy within him erupt like a supernova.

The silence was broken as the room exploded in light. Aether rushed out of Korbin. The magic, it was so much, it was overwhelming power. The runecircle with its protective layers simply shattered. The runes in the reinforced walls flared up and without the extra layer of protection, the Bifrost would have been torn apart by the sheer magic force he emitted.

As the magic reached Anon, a blue shield kept the alien from being blown away.

The two wolves in Korbin’s mind howled as the Aether reshaped them. New muscles formed as they substantially increased in size and their fur glowed and waved with the magic.

Korbin floated in the air as blue Aether wrapped his body in a mantle of power.

He felt his senses reach a new level, and he felt everything in greater detail. The Aether was so much stronger than Essence as it coursed through his veins.
