Keep adding to your list of words and expressions about feelings and emotions.

Many young children live lives that are far removed from the experiences of those who work with them. It is so important that every practitioner comes to understand each of their children as individuals who have their own personal histories and their own unique personalities that are formed, influentially, by their parents and the circumstances into which they are born. If judgements are made about children and their families, based on the yardstick of practitioners’ own lives, then any child who falls outside of those narrow parameters may sense feelings of alienation or disapproval from the very practitioner with whom they are meant to forge a close relationship. (Fisher, J. 2016)

Notice that the word ‘learning’ is not used here, but what is described is actually all about things that are learnt. All the things that are learnt through feelings and emotions. Why do some children thrive at school when others struggle to succeed?

Compare the quote from Fisher with this from Brooker (2002):

All of children’s early experience – from being picked up and cuddled, fed and changed, rocked and soothed, to being taken to the library or shown how to count – is a form of learning, and all the All Saints’ children had acquired an incalculable amount of knowledge before starting school. (Brooker, 2002)

Both authors are reflecting on the importance of the ‘home learning experience’ and how we must be sensitive to the previous experiences of the child.
