TRY THIS AT HOME
Here’s an experiential exercise that will demonstrate how we communicate through our facial expressions—our eyes, lips, eyebrows, and the many muscles of the face.
You can do this in front of a mirror to get the full effect. But even if you don’t have a mirror handy, we think you’ll find this exercise fun and informative.
For the following list of situations or events, say “Oh” to each situation, and observe the changes in your expression. (You can also try this with other words—“Interesting” or “Wow” but use the same word over and over.)
• Sunrise at a mountain campsite
• Fire visible on the upper story of a neighbor’s home
• Holding a newborn baby minutes after the birth
• Receiving an unexpected check in the mail
• Seeing that the deer have nibbled your garden
• Called on the carpet by your boss
• The first taste of your favorite dish or dessert
• Facing a steep trail of switchbacks
• Awaking to the season’s first snowfall
• Getting a flat tire as you are driving on a freeway
• Listening to a favorite piece of music on the radio
• Receiving a medical diagnosis of a serious health condition
• Being reunited with someone you love after a long absence
Question for Reflection: What observations did you make about your facial expressions as you said the same word to respond to different situations?
