Chapter Eleven: Father Son Talk 2.0

Again, Cole feels a lightness, but not of the refreshing, airy variety. It is a dead, cold emptiness unknown by the human experience, as it is fully disembodied from it

“I’m pretty sure pathfinders have grappling hook kits,” The Captain says in the depths of Cole’s being.

Seeing, feeling, and perceiving nothing, Cole can only respond with his spirit.

“Well good to know, sir.”

“You also understand blanketing human bodies with fragmentation is also generally poor form.”

“Obviously, but it was all I could think of at the time…. How are the others?”

“They’re well. Coffee’s making calls for the team and holding back, at least until Hoss decides to get Eqarne to order an approach on the Eminence.”

“The Eminence?”

“My research paid off. I figured I’d wait until a bit of downtime to let you know about it.”

“Well I’m down now.”

The Captain scoffs pleasantly. “That you are. That titan class is the prototype colony ship the R.L.S.N. Eminence. It blinked from Arda’s shipyards nearly one hundred years ago, and hasn’t been seen since.”

“So it’s not an O.E.L. vessel.”

“… At least, not in origin. From what I’ve gathered, the now defunct Exploration Corps expected the vessel to be able to operate within an electrical anomaly as large as the Ezz Nebula.”

“It does, though.”

“At least it does now. What they know is that they lost contact with the vessel, and only now with the O.E.L.’s anti-E.M.P. technology we’ve backwards engineered have we been able to have a chance at finding out what really happened. Like our own comms the signal is too filled with the nebula’s static to reach the outside world, but Lascardia has a new secret weapon.”

Cole sighs. “That E.M.P. shit’s useful, but it’s not going to get a fleet here.”

The Captain laughs.“I wasn’t talking about our recently stolen tech.”

“Yeah?”

“I was talking about us Cole Outstar. Us humans are going to turn the tide of this cold war right onto the O.E.L.’s noses.”

“You think they took over the ship?”

“Yes, or at least played puppeteer to the force that did. If O.E.L. vessels are on that planet, they will have had definitely come in contact with the Eminence at some point. There’s no doubt in my mind that they’re involved. Anyway, as I know your position by intuition, I’ve taken the liberty of planning the next move. I’m working on getting help to you, but it’s likely going to be help in the form of ships firing at anything O.E.L.-tagged.”

“Which our current ship just happens to be,” Cole answers.

“Precisely. So you need to get on the Eminence, figure out the story, and either coerce or fight your way to reclaim the ship. I’ve already gone over the details with the Lord Director. You’re authorized to use any force necessary, so long as you complete two objectives: you retrieve the Eminence’s black box, and two, you either arrest control of, or destroy the Eminence.”

“That’s… that’s a tall order.”

“It is. This will be your most difficult mission by far, and in no short thanks to the likely complex political situation you’ll encounter on board.
