Elise

It’s a fresh Saturday morning, and the clocks are turning forward tonight. I’ve risen with the sun, too excited to sleep any longer. Today, Louisa is coming.

I’m up and out early, down at the weekly farmer’s market, buying fresh bread, cheese, pickles and olives for lunch. All things I know my daughter loves. I’d normally buy some nice ham as well but, somehow, I’m off meat these days.

It’s Maggie and Stevie’s influence, I know. Not that they’ve ever told me I should stop eating meat, but when I hear Stevie talk about why she doesn’t, it makes sense to me. And I love animals. Always have. We had rabbits when the children were little, and we used to have hens, when we lived up there at the old place. I loved the dogs at the Camelford-Bassetts’ (I did love the children, too) and the horses, though I was a bit scared of them.

Anyway, I’ve decided to cut out the meat a bit more, and the fish. But a cake seems acceptable, so on the way back I pop into Bramley’s for a small Victoria sponge, which was always Louisa’s favourite, and Bramley’s do the best in town.

I’m back home by ten, my goods packed away for now, and taking a breather by the window. Needing a breather after a little trip into town is another sure sign of age but I’ve got to accept these things. Louisa is due at about half-eleven, and she’s sent me a text when she’s stopped at some services:
