HAYZE

Ablink is all it takes. A flash of white.

And Hayze is standing in the windswept Stormsphere.

“For fractal’s sake,” he growls, registering he’s alone, just like the first time. Although he knew this was coming, it doesn’t mean he likes it.

Or accepts it.

He stomps around the boulder, remembering it was Aura who found him last time. He’s only halfway when she barrels around. The moment their gazes connect, she leaps into his arms.

Hayze holds her tight, pressing a kiss to her temple, her cheek, her lips. Aura sighs at the first, leans into the second, and shivers as their mouths meld. It takes his breath away far more completely than any wonder in the world could.

This is all that matters. This is all that’s ever mattered. Even when Aura gets her memories back, surely she’ll realize that.

They pull back, clasping hands. Their fingers weave together tightly, the feeling so familiar that Hayze’s heart rate settles. He looks around, already knowing what to expect. They’re high on a mountain, the Stormsphere spread out below, the sky stretching for miles above.

“Is this how it’s going to be?” he calls out. A repeat in each of the four Quadrants, just to see what they’re capable of. To see who will win. “Because it’s getting monotonous!”

Aura squeezes his hand. “I’m pretty sure we don’t want to be challenging them,” she says. She glances up even as her brow comes down. “Even if they’re being jerks.”

Hayze almost grins. She’s right. On both counts.

“Aura?” Jewel cries out. “Aura!”

They hurry around the boulder, finding Jewel not far away, looking frantic. Relief fills her features when she sees Aura. When her gaze rises to Hayze, the relief blends with something else. Something he can’t quite place. Confusion? Frustration?

Atmos appears, stopping beside Jewel. “Did I hear you talking to Eterna?” he asks smugly as he crosses his arms in his robes, which are now completely dry.

“The moment you realize it’s the leaders pulling the strings, is the moment you’ll realize who’s listening,” Hayze responds, shaking his head.

Pace jogs up behind Atmos, looking relieved to find them. “Here we go again, huh?” he says, patting a rock beside him.

“Seems so,” Hayze says dryly. “We just keep doing what we’ve been doing. Working as a team.”

Pace nods, followed by Jewel. Atmos rolls his eyes.

“We’re stronger together,” Aura says. “No Element exists on its own.”

Hayze’s chest fills with pride. How can someone be so beautiful and wise all at once?

Pace’s shoulders hunch, having the grace to flush a little. “Work together. Got it.”

Hayze wonders if Pace would’ve agreed so readily if he hadn’t won the last Game, even as he’s conscious he and Aura haven’t won a Quadrant yet. While he doesn’t give a damnatus about winning these Games, unease still slithers through his insides. If Aura loses, what will that mean…

“Cyclonis!” Atmos gasps, his face lighting up as he stares further up the mountain.

Hayze sighs, remembering what else was waiting for them in the Stormsphere. The Air leader. He shakes his head. “He’s as real as everything else out here.
