Chapter 4

Xian peered through her welding mask as she carefully applied the torch to the newly assembled guardian unit. It wasn’t entirely necessary, but she wanted to make certain the robot held together. She could hear Zoe 2 bouncing around behind her in excitement and the uneasy and yet hopeful shifting of Guardian as she watched her love meticulously pieced back together. Combined with Micro and Tippy, who were cantering the room and playing like children, the distraction was become background noise, constantly buzzing behind Xian, who occasionally paused what she was doing to say absently, “Settle down over there . . .” But really, she was focused on her craft. She loved tinkering and fixing things, especially if it benefitted someone.

Xian was also afraid to send anyone outside, even with Super there to watch over them. She already hated the fact that Zoe 2 frequently went for strolls – strolls!—through the Outer Sphere with Guardian, but she was also weary of accidentally teaching Zoe 2 to live in fear. She remembered what it was like when she was a child, always anxious and crying and frightened and hiding, how Xy’s horror stories and dire warnings had kept her up at night, and she did not want the same for Zoe 2. She wanted the child to live fearlessly and carefree for as long as she could.

Besides, Guardian was an excellent protector. She was built for it. And Super was also standing guard outside and always kept within earshot of the two – as Xian had asked her.

“There,” Xian said, killing the torch and straightening up to admire her work.

Guardian stepped close and just stood there, staring at Carnella. She was silent for so long that Xian looked around at her anxiously and pushed the welding mask back from her face.

“You did it,” whispered Guardian. “You fixed Carnella! You’re a genius!”

“W-Well . . .” said Xian modestly, though she was secretly very pleased. “She’ll have to finish charging, and then she’ll wake up and talk to you.”

“Thank you so much, Xian,” said Guardian – with such emotion that Xian wondered if robots had souls.

What was a soul, anyway? Wasn’t it just sentience? The ability to empathize and feel love?

Guardian insisted on standing beside Carnella and waiting for her to awake. Zoe 2 sat on the floor next to Guardian, drawing stick figures on the floor with the chalk she’d found in one of the storage crates, and Micro sat with her, taking up a piece of chalk and drawing as well. The two chatted happily as Tippy hovered over them both, her ears forward as she tried to comprehend what they were doing.

With everyone else engaged in their doings, Xian grabbed a nutrition cube from her backpack and went outside. Under the gray sky, the dry earth was black and spreading away for miles to the horizon, where grim clouds sailed low, looking like dirty sponges. Xian stood beside Super and bit into her nutrition cube, enjoying the breeze and thinking it was a cold day.
