Lost Penguin’s Daring Escape From Sydney Zoo Filmed On CCTV (27th November)

A little penguin from Sydney Zoo – known by his keepers as Einstein – managed to escape from Sydney Zoo on Wednesday. Zookeeper Ted Smith reported that Einstein had been visibly restless since the transportation of one of Sydney Zoo’s rockhopper penguins to a zoo in the UK a few weeks beforehand. It is unclear whether this detail influenced Einstein’s escape, but when a gate in the enclosure was left open during feeding time Einstein made a dash for freedom, and was quickly lost among the crowds. His initial escape from the penguin enclosure was caught on CCTV, but the zoo has so far been unable to find out how, and indeed if, he managed to escape from the zoo itself.

If anyone has any information relating to the location of Einstein the penguin, they should contact Sydney Zoo immediately. Einstein is particularly distinctive due to his orange beak, which differs from the standard dark beak of other little penguins. This mutation helps his zookeepers to recognise him.

Little penguins, otherwise known as fairy penguins, are the world’s smallest penguin species, growing up to around 34 cm and weighing up to 1.4 kg …
