Soon after dark, when our friend was out of visual contact, we split off from the Mission Bay, reversed course, and steamed north the rest of the night. Every time the shadower's clover leaf brought him back over us, we backed full speed. This put the "bow wave" on the south end of the ship and made a "wake" come off the north end, indicating that we were still running south at 15 knots. In the phosphorescent waters near Panama this was "unmistakable" from the air on a dark night.

We couldn't actually turn south when he approached and north again when he left, because two 180-degree turns require about five minutes and would have left a conspicuous S-shaped trail in the luminescent water showing exactly what we were doing.
