The Effingham Chamber of Commerce had a Silver Dollar Club around 1960. In this photograph, Jack Thies stands behind the meat counter, while butcher Ernie Niccum gives a pert young lady a piece of bologna as a young boy looks on. Clarence and Ed Thies opened their first grocery store in 1921, right across National Avenue from the Pennsylvania Railroad (now CSX) tracks. The original store even had a soda fountain. Niccum began working for the Thies family in the late 1930s and stayed with the store until his death around 1980.
