Chapter 7

Groundwork Case Study of Universities' Building Capacity for Education, Inclusion and Philosophies of Trust through Doctoral Study: The Literature and Methodologies

Introduction

The Professional Challenge

The first part of the book introduced A Blueprint for Character Development for Evolution (ABCDE) and Assessment for Personal and Social Learning (APSL) to Empower Young Societal Innovators for Equity and Renewal (EYSIER) as a road map for achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Equitable Education for All. I explained how the road map may be mobilised to achieve the remaining 16 SDGs aligned with citizens moving from Stage A to Stage E within a social contract they understand deeply and are committed to, with an embedded economy mapped to duties, and rights. I discussed how making choices about what kind of good life they want to live for a happy ending requires an understanding of social contracts on a deep level. I also identified that Professional Educators' and Administrators' Committees for Empowerment, with universities as hubs to facilitate public engagement, provides an infrastructure for citizens to participate in as much or as little as they want, to achieve the SDGs. I have explained a paradigm shift required to implement the road map; ABCDE, through APSL to EYSIER to achieve SDG 4, will need to be fully supported by education policy. Education policy will also need to include partnerships between universities and Compulsory and Post-Compulsory Education Systems to prepare and professionally develop Professional Educators and Administrators to implement the road map ABCDE through APSL to EYSIER.

The professional challenge this chapter addresses is that there is a gap in the ways the wider society understands the role universities play in partnership with Compulsory and Post-Compulsory Education Systems, in preparing and developing Professional Educators and Administrators' learning journeys including becoming Senior Seasoned Credentialed Educational Leaders. The gift of preparation and development offered by universities is provided through postgraduate research with a sharp focus on the doctorate and masters' level or EQF Level 7 courses of study. The courses include:

Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) for Initial Teacher Education (ITE) which is normally a third of a full masters' degree and teacher preparation though often this course can be at Honours level;

Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) of Education for professional development which is normally two-thirds of a masters' degree for early-career credentialed educational professionals;

A full masters' (MSc or MA) to develop Professional Educators' and Administrators' professional practice as mid-career credentialled educational professionals.

Doctorate to develop Senior Professional Educators and Administrators into Expert Senior Seasoned Credentialed Educational Leaders in becoming.
