Kookaburra

Choosing a bird to represent our country has been the subject of many international competitions. Brolgas and magpies have been seriously considered, while the kookaburra (q.v.) was ultimately disqualified due to its nom de plumage and its irreverent, inappropriate, ill-timed outbursts of laughter. Its reptilian diet also went against it being chosen as an image for a tasteful Australian coat of arms.
