The tunnel is too long and winding to see the end of it from the entrance, and it’s dark inside. In other words, I’m glad when Elaine pulls out a flashlight.
I feel the muzzle of a gun being shoved into my back. I can take a hint, so I gather all my courage and start to shuffle forward in between the car parked across the road and the boulders to enter the tunnel. The others climb over them. Adam coughs quietly a few times, but other than that he fortunately keeps quiet. Luca hesitantly walks besides me, tail between his legs.
The footfalls sound heavy trapped in between the cracked walls. This tunnel is clearly manmade, but must be from an era during which they didn’t bother to finish the walls. We are surrounded by roughly-hewn stone on all sides. A little ways further down is a ventilation system that’s out of order, barely visible in the fading light coming from outside.
Even though Elaine walks ahead with three men – literally acting as a beacon in the darkness – Sasha and Steph walk alongside me, and Howard is situated at my rear, I can’t shake the feeling that a Hunter might jump out from the darkness at any moment. It lunges at my throat and makes me look around furtively. I keep an extra close eye on the darkness to my right, because no one’s walking there. There is nothing but a rocky wall, and yet I’m certain that red eyes and demonic grins are lurking in the dark. I know it’s just my imagination fueled by the trauma I’ve experienced in the past few months, but that doesn’t change the situation. When we reach the end of the tunnel and see the sunlight again, I couldn’t be happier. The light after that darkness is so bright at first that it feels like it’s burning my retinas.
I haven’t even properly left the tunnel behind before the next one pops up, about three hundred yards further up the road. It’s cutting through another mountain side and seems to taunt me with its darkness.
The red eyes! Can you see them? Dozens of them. They’re hovering...
A shiver runs through me.
This tunnel is barricaded too, this time by two trucks. I was hoping to at least get a glimpse of Keystone Valley, so I’d know for sure that Elaine had spoken the truth about the village still being there, but the mountain’s blocking my view. It doesn’t really matter at this point, though – I have already found Steph. Or rather, he has found me.
Only now do I see the smaller road that’s branching off this one, winding its way down to a village at the foot of the mountain. It looks peaceful from afar, as though it hasn’t been touched by the apocalypse at all.
Slowly, we trudge down the road. I look back at the tunnel one more time, taking in the darkness it contains.
The red eyes. They’re hovering...
I quickly shake off the thought.
