MARTINA

What a day it had been. I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of empathy for Kay, although she had steadfastly refused to speak with a counselor. Perhaps, after she returned home and had some time to process the avalanche of revelations about her family—or rather, her non-family, as it turned out—she might reconsider. It was going to take several days to confirm if she was indeed Kaitlyn Ramsey. I found myself hoping she was. Kay’s composite was a remarkably close match to the little girl kidnapped at the age of four. It seemed highly likely it was her, especially considering where Ansel had been at the time of her disappearance in Oregon, the very state from which she had been snatched. He could very well be the kidnapper, and she could be Kaitlyn Ramsey.

Our next steps were clear: compare her DNA to that of Kaitlyn Ramsey. This would not only bring her answers but might also reunite her with her family, if they were still searching for her. Since our meeting, I had already taken to the internet, scouring for any information on Kaitlyn Ramsey’s family, wondering if they were still in Oregon or if they had other children.

My search led me to a Facebook page dedicated to finding Kaitlyn. The family had posted pictures and age-progressed images of what Kaitlyn might look like now. The resemblance to Kay was remarkable. It had to be her.

The determination of her family was palpable in each post. They had never given up, evidenced by family photos and one particularly heart-wrenching image of a mom, dad, and a little boy with a caption that pleaded, “Please bring our Kaitlyn home.”

If Kay was indeed Kaitlyn, it appeared she had a little brother. While I wasn’t the biggest proponent of this burgeoning social media phenomenon, its growing popularity was undeniable. Platforms like these allowed individuals like Kaitlyn’s family to share their stories with potentially hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people. Perhaps one day, these digital networks could play a pivotal role in solving crimes, if they hadn’t already. It struck me that many of the cases that were solved, especially the tough ones, were due to the relentless determination of the families involved. Kaitlyn’s case might just be the next one to join those ranks.

I hoped Ashland PD would be able to compare Kay’s and Kaitlyn’s DNA soon, finally bringing answers for her, and hopefully reunite Kay with her family.

A sudden eruption of loud yelling and cheers pierced the usual calm of the office, breaking my concentration. It wasn’t typical for our team to be so boisterous, especially not without a good reason. I left my office and ventured down the hallway, the sounds of celebration growing louder with each step. The cacophony of high-fives and jubilant shouting led me directly to the tech cave, the epicenter of the commotion.

“What’s going on?” I asked, stepping into the room filled with an electric energy.

Vincent, hunched over a monitor alongside Lewis, one of our computer geniuses, looked up with a grin spreading across his face.
