THE BED HAD A BAMBOO canopy and frothy gauze drapes. Like everything else in the house, she loved it. Only one, tiki-themed bathroom gave her any pause, and that had more to do with bad memories and psychotic monkey men than any real reservations. As a whole, the place looked like a dream, the sort of house you find in a travel magazine and circle as if, someday, you might win the lottery and move to Tahiti.
It even had lizards. Weldon had pointed out the speed demons the night before while he carried her, dripping wet, up the deck stairs. Tiny, jewel-green lizards that didnât quite register as geckos, but vanished far too quickly to be certain when disturbed. Heâd found paradise, that was certain, but she still had no idea what he meant to do with it.
As if on cue, he groaned and rolled toward her. The cotton sheets crinkled and lifted with his movement, sending a draft of warm, tropical air along her naked body. Paradise, for certain. Weldonâs arm fell across her waist, his hair brushed her shoulder, and footsteps clattered up the stairs from the main floor.
Weldon sat up straight as a board. The sheets went with him, leaving Stevie both exposed, and trembling. She reached for a corner of fabric, but he moved faster, sliding out of bed and dragging the covers with him. He leaned against the door and listened, but Stevie could hear the voices all the way from bed, where she sat completely naked in a strange house.
She dove for her clothing. Unfortunately, some of them had tangled in the dressings now covering most of the lower half of Weldon. She found her swimsuit bottoms and one sock.
âWeldon,â she hissed from behind the bed. âWho is it?â
âI think itâs the realtor. He isnât supposed to be showing it today.â
âRealtor? Shit.â She crawled to the end of the bed, where her jeans peeked from behind the gauze trailing on the carpet. âAre we even supposed to be here?â
âSure we are.â
âWeldon!â
âHe gave me the key so I could show you the place.â
âAnd the sleepover?â Stevie tugged her pants and the bamboo poles rattled overhead.
âItâs fine.â He pressed his ear against the door. âI think theyâre heading this way.â
âI thought it was fine.â She heard him flick the lock, but pulled her pants on as if her life depended on it. When she crawled back up on the bed, Weldon stood beside it with her bikini top dangling from one finger and a dangerous fire in his eyes.
âIt was better than fine,â he said.
âGive it to me.â
He sighed and passed it across. When sheâd tied herself back into a semi-dignified state, he handed her the disk key. âTake this back to your apartment. Iâll get him to send me home.â
âWhere is that, exactly?â
âHuh?â
âHome. Have you seen my shirt?â
âIâll bring it by later.â
âWhen?â
The doorknob rattled, and a voice called through the panel, âHello?â
Weldon leaned down long enough to kiss her and take a quick jab in the ribs.
