Chapter 18

Max and I looked into one another’s eyes and I knew in that moment that it truly didn’t matter whether our baby was a girl or a boy. We lifted the slice of cake up into the air and the room fell silent.

“Uh.” Max tilted his head to the side. “Is that?”

“Yes.” I sighed. “It’s purple.”

“Purple?” My mother’s eyes widened. “Why in the world would they make it purple?”

“It was probably blue and the dye just ran a little.” Charlotte shrugged.

“A boy!” I clapped my hands.

“Now wait. It could be pink and when the color mixed up in the batter it ended up purple.” My mother put her hands on her hips.

“A girl!” Max grinned.

“Maybe it’s twins,” someone piped up from the back of the crowd.

“It’s not twins!” I snapped, and then laughed. “Okay, I guess the bakery made a mistake. Sorry, everyone.”

“I’ll call and find out what happened.” My mother sighed as she walked away.

While she was on the phone with the bakery Max and I made our rounds with the guests. To my surprise, just about every person patted or rubbed my belly. It left me feeling rather uncomfortable, as I wasn’t used to being touched by every person I spoke to. Each one made a guess at the gender as well. By the time my mother returned several people were making bets.

“Alright, everyone, according to Larry at the bakery, the dye must have run. He checked the envelope and it’s a boy!”

“A boy!” My eyes widened. I heard Max cheer with happiness as the entire house erupted with excitement.

As we began opening all the gifts, I couldn’t help but imagine my little boy.

That night when we returned home Max took my hand and led me into the bedroom. I sat down on the edge of the bed, and he knelt down in front of me.

“Hello in there, little one. I hope you enjoyed the party. Maybe it seemed like it was for Mom and Dad, but it was really for you. Now if you could help us out with a name, that would be great!”

“Tomorrow, Max, we’ll talk about names tomorrow.” I curled up in the bed with my clothes still on and crashed into a heavy sleep.
