As Ogawa first became interested in photography when he was fifteen, in 1875, the year Uchida died, some of these dates are very tight and appear suspect.

Professor Burton, usually so accurate, is also surely talking about Shimooka Renjo. The meeting with Ogawa referred to in the text would have taken place around 1875. Uchida would have been thirty-one, hardly the "oldest photographer in the country." It looks, therefore, that Burton was wrong, yet I feel somehow uneasy about the whole Uchida story, as the known information about him does not quite ring true.

No real evalutation can be made of Uchida's photographic ability, since only a few images have so far been attributed to him. More research on Uchida is certainly needed. One encouraging factor is that there are a number of carte-de-visite photographs with his studio stamp on the reverse.
