Shivering from the cold air, Baxter entered the drawing room looking for tea and a warm fire, but he found it full of women from the surrounding area. “Ames, I will take my tea in the library.”

“No, you will not.” Gigi crossed the room and took his arm. “Your brothers were supposed to help us with these charity baskets, but I have not seen any of them since this morning.” Gigi gave Ames a pointed look. He knew the butler understood the command. Tea would be brought into the drawing room.

It would be futile to argue with Gigi, so Baxter allowed her to pull him across the room, where she forced him into one of the armchairs, next to Miss Kensington. He’d made the decision to show her his charms, and so without delay and offering no argument, he went to work stuffing the baskets with usable items.

When he’d been a lad, his mother had taught him the finer points of serving those less fortunate. He knew how to build a charity basket, and he hoped to impress Miss Kensington with his skills.

“Miss Kensington, did you and your neighbors gather in Boston to make charity baskets?”

“We did, quite often.”

“What sorts of offerings would you give?”

“Breads, pies, and little candies. Much the same as what is in these. We would also arrange baskets with medical supplies when necessary.”

Baxter picked up a blue hair ribbon and held it out. “Would you include such important items as ribbons?”

“Very much so, my lord. A girl of any circumstance must have hair ribbons.”

Baxter enjoyed seeing Miss Kensington’s smile. Her cheeks were rosy, but not from embarrassment. She was smiling out of pleasure, which left him breathless. As he made little comments that seemed trite, she opened, and a sparkle of amusement entered her eyes. Baxter was certain he’d never had such enjoyment while putting together charity baskets.

He marveled over the seemingly small effort he’d made. If that was all it would take to win the woman over, he would have her swooning in his arms before supper. Baxter spent the entire day with Gigi and Miss Kensington in the sleigh, delivering gifts. He didn’t spare a thought for all the work left undone on his desk nor the hours it would take away from his rest to check the ledgers. Instead, he enjoyed the afternoon and put all his worries aside.
