Chapter 43
145 days after âEvacuationâ
âCome on Gamlang, keep up or weâll get separated again,â shouted Alex, looking back from her bike.
Alex continued along Westbourne Grove towards Bayswater. Gamlang Jai followed close behind, jumping from wall to pavement to car. Alex had to keep her eyes on the road now, the growth of vegetation and the slow degradation of the city meant she was cycling an assault course, with potentially lethal obstacles that could send her over the handle bars and into a world of broken bones and crushed limbs.
Taking a small detour onto Ledbury Road, anything to mix up the monotony, Alex caught a glimpse of a shadowy figure in the window of a second floor flat. The surprise sent her veering into the kerb and she was only just able to stop herself going straight over the handlebars. The Taser shot out of her pocket and smashed against the garden wall.
âGamlang Jai, did you see that? What, who the hell was that, was that a person?â
Strangely, her first thought was to run, to get out of there as quickly as possible.
I agree, said Monkey, no good will come of this.
Churning with a combination of hope and fear, Alex slowly walked back to where sheâd seen the figure. Looking up at the window, she couldnât honestly tell what she wanted to find.
âA mannequin, a bloody shop dummy. What kind of an idiot puts that in the window of their flat?â
Turning away in disgust, and furious with herself for having actually considered the possibility, Alex saw a sign next to the front door that read: Willington Student Accommodation â Block C.
âMorons,â she screamed. Gamlang Jai took a seat on the wall and waited patiently as Alex took several turns before landing a stone plum on the mannequinâs chest and toppling it out of sight.
Alex turned to pick up her bike. âOh great, now my wheelâs buckled. Awesome. Come on cat, weâd better go back to Evans and pick up a new before it gets dark.â
That afternoon Alex marked the mannequin sighting on her big map of London. It had been a long time since the hope of finding other people alive had reared its ugly head. All the emotion had been draining, and she slept well that night.
