There were some raised eyebrows when they spread out the additional arsenal of weapons on the kitchen table in the island manager’s cottage. Everyone was present, except Margaret and Minnie.

“We took the liberty of getting a Glock and an MP5 for everyone,” Peter said.

“And loads of ammo,” Scotty added.

“I appreciate this is not to everyone’s taste, but I am just thinking we need to be prepared for any intruders, and above all, I see this as stuff to defend ourselves with; I am not proposing that we undertake raiding parties,” Peter said.

“Are you suggesting we wear one of these gun belts the whole time?” Becky asked.

“I am certainly suggesting it might be prudent, but it is just that, a suggestion,” Peter said.

“I’m not sure I want to carry a gun the whole time or Callum to be exposed to an environment of everyone being armed,” Mary added.

Helen had been listening and suddenly stood up. “Peter upset me at the start of our trip with his decision to bring a shotgun with us, but from what I have seen in these last five months, it would be naive to think we can stay here and not expect someone, at some stage, to become inquisitive and come and investigate us here on Rona. I expect if more people are scouring the country for food and other essentials, it’s only a matter of time before someone decides, rather like us, to borrow a boat and come looking at what’s over here. So, I respect your view and actually share your concern about firearms, but we have to be practical and ready to defend ourselves,” she said.

The debate continued for some time around the kitchen table, with an agreement that everyone would take the weapons that had been brought for them, but it was up to each individual to decide whether to carry them or not. All Peter asked was that each weapon be kept cleaned and loaded and be in a position where it could be grabbed quickly if the need arose. Everyone agreed to this, and Peter and Duncan distributed the weapons and ammunition, and the meeting broke up.

Life on Rona began to take on a normality and routine. As the weeks passed, Becky was able to report progress on the field of crops that had been sown and it was clear for all to see the green shoots of new plants thrive in the warm late spring sunshine. Duncan and his colleagues took the trawler and sometimes the catamaran out into the channel and beyond to catch plentiful supplies of fish. Every so often, Margaret and Minnie would venture down from their more remote location to enjoy the company of the others, and as the weather became warmer, it became a pleasant walk for the pair of them. Peter would offer them a lift back up to their cottage in the Ranger, as the route back was mostly uphill. Callum had grown fond of Talisker the dog and was put in
