Airplane pilots use checklists and preflight inspections to identify mechanical or structural issues before they take to the skies.

CHAPTER SEVEN

BEYOND THE BASICS

Horizontal Panoramics

The Fate Bell Rock Shelter at Seminole Canyon State Park was once the home of native tribes in South Texas that took shelter in the large, natural rock structures. We know they did this because they left behind prehistoric rock art, thousands of years old, that is still visible today.

To best capture the prominence of the rock shelter amidst the surrounding landscape, I decided to create a panoramic image. This is easier than it sounds. If your drone software allows you to have a grid overlay, it’s even easier. Take the far-left photograph first, then pan the drone about 20 to 30 percent to the right. Capture the second image, and so on.

In this case, I ended up with four or five images that were then automatically stitched together using the panoramic stitching option in Lightroom.
