SATURDAY, 9:40 P.M.

A door chime startled Grey awake. It was the new security system alerting that a door had opened. He bolted upright on the couch and saw Christina coming through the back door. It was dark out already. How long had he been asleep?

Christina turned the deadbolt and saw him. “Oh sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you. I wanted to clear the backyard before Boss goes out.”

He ran a hand over his gritty eyes. “Thanks. I didn’t even hear the door the first time.”

“You were tired.” Christina peeked through the blinds into the front yard. Why didn’t she check the cameras on the TV? Maybe she trusted her eyes more than the technology.

“I didn’t plan on falling asleep.” After staring at the computer, his eyes had needed the rest. And now the cut on his temple throbbed. When he touched a finger to the stitches, the wound felt hot. A little more antibiotic cream would help stave off infection.

“Are you doing okay?” Her eyes scanned his face.

Grey waved a dismissive hand at her. “Oh, yeah. A little sore and these stitches itch like crazy.”

“Been there,” she said.

Their conversation from earlier left him with questions and he wanted to know more about the suicide bomber in Afghanistan. How could he get her to open up again?

There was something that had caused her to hesitate that day. Some reason why she hadn’t squeezed the trigger. Had she recognized the target? It was clear Christina struggled with guilt about that day, but she chose to bottle her feelings up instead of sharing. He’d try to respect that. For now.

Grey’s stomach rumbled and he pressed his hand to his belly. “I’m starving. How about I order some dinner? Chinese?”

“Sounds lovely.” She was still watching through the window and her words sounded distant.

He tried again. “What would you like?”

“Anything is fine.”

Okay, so small talk wasn’t going to get her to open up. Had he done something wrong? “I know this great place that delivers. I’ll order one of everything. It’s good to have options, don’t you think?”

“Mmhmm.” She released the blinds. “I’ll take Boss out. Bree sent over the texts and voicemails from Sokolovich’s phone. We can listen to the messages over dinner.”

“Romantic.”

One eyebrow shot up in surprise.

Great. The word had slipped out as a joke, but he wanted to yank it back. The last thing he wanted to do was scare her away.

Christina clipped Boss’s leash to his collar and left without a word.

“Smooth,” he said. “Real smooth.”

With a suppressed grunt, he moved into his wheelchair and found his cell phone in the kitchen. He used an app to order way more Chinese food than the two of them could eat in a week. Movement on the television caught his eye and he turned his wheelchair for a closer look.

A camera captured Christina and Boss walking around the backyard. The infrared lights illuminated them in black and white as they paced the grassy area, pausing every few moments for Boss to sniff something interesting.
