Elliotâs strong legs are holding tight around my waist, and her body is pressed flush against my back. What started as a playful gesture to help a cold woman in the snow now has my mind some kind of fucked up and thinking things I have no business thinking. I shake my head, trying to dislodge the thought. I need to stop while Iâm ahead; no good can come of it. I try my best to ignore the buzzing electricity I feel from her small body pressed into my back. Come on, Williams, get it together.
I see the inn in the distance. Itâs a quaint little place in the middle of nowhere, and thank fuck itâs open because weâre both on the verge of hypothermia. We get to the front door and I wait until Iâve stepped across the threshold before I put Elliot down.
The inn has an older mom-and-pop-style diner with a bar on the bottom floor. The lights are dim and thereâs only a handful of patrons here. Iâm starving and realize we havenât stopped to eat anything since breakfast. I make my way over to the bar and have a seat.
âWhat are you doing?â Elliot asks with panic in her voice.
âIâm cold, hungry, and itâs been a hell of a day so Iâm going to have a drink.â I pat the barstool next to me, suggesting she take a seat as well.
She reluctantly slides onto the barstool and brings the large menu up to her face. âWhat are we going to do about the car? Donât we need to call someone, like a tow truck or something?â
The bartender, wearing a shirt with the name Gus on the pocket, rounds the corner and answers before I can say anything. âYou wonât be getting in touch with any tow trucks tonight, not in this storm. Can I get you something to drink?â
âHi, Gus. Iâll have a Makers neat, make it a double, and a cheeseburger, please,â I say, handing my menu back to him.
He looks at Elliot expectantly. âI donât know if alcohol is the best choice, Benjamin. We still have to figure out how to get to Minneapolis tonight.â
âMinneapolis? Good luck with that, darlinâ. I hate to break it to ya, but you arenât going to Minneapolis tonight, not in this weather. Have you seen the news?â He points to a TV in the back of the bar. âTheyâre reporting three feet of snow over the next forty-eight hours. Itâs the biggest blizzard this town has seen in twenty years. You may as well get settled and wait it out like everyone else.â
Panic rises in her face, and she looks like sheâs about to cry. âBut weâve still got to get to Minneapolis to meet the next influencer in the lineup. Itâs going to look unprofessional if we cancel. What is Thad going to say?â
âIâd like to remind you that Thad Powell is not my boss; I can do whatever the fuck I please.â I let my harsh words sink in before I continue.
