GIVE AMBERS A FRESH LOOK

“Many pioneering craft breweries focused on amber ales. To me, that’s a style that’s very well balanced, with a combination of malt and hop character. Now amber ales are a style that is pretty far back in the rearview mirror,” says Master Cicerone Ryan Daley. It’s time to make these objects appear a little bit closer. “They still have a lot of aroma and flavor complexity, but at the same time are pretty easy drinking. They appeal to both sides—somebody that is a little farther along in the sensory abilities, as well as somebody that’s just coming into beer or isn’t used to intense flavor profiles. In terms of what you get from the experience, it’s tough to beat.” Here are three widely available ambers to help color a new opinion:

1. Anderson Valley Brewing: Boont Amber Ale. Two kinds of crystal malts create the crimson hue in this complex California classic that smells of toffee and fresh-baked raisin cookies.

2. Left Hand Brewing: Sawtooth Ale. Formerly the Colorado brewery’s flagship, Sawtooth still appeals with its balance of bready malt and herbal bitterness.

3. Tröegs Independent Brewing: HopBack Amber Ale. The Pennsylvanians use a hopback device to recirculate fruity and floral Crystal and resinous Nugget hops through the caramel-rich ale.
