CHAPTER ELEVEN

I sleep with one eye open the entire night after that threatening note.

When morning arrives, I’m relieved to still be in one piece. Who would send me a threatening letter? And what are they trying to stop me from finding out? If anything, it just makes me more curious and determined to get to the bottom of things.

As I brush my teeth in the bathroom, I tell Eve about it through my tablet. “This letter proves we’re onto something, Eve. If we weren’t close, they wouldn’t threaten us!”

“Indeed. However, I fear for your safety, Jan,” Eve says. “Perhaps it would be best to suspend our search.”

I scoff. “Come on, Eve. You were happy to help before and now you’re having second thoughts? We need to keep going. We’re on the verge of something—I just know it!”

“Not if your life is in jeopardy, Jan. The author of the note could be dangerous.”

“You said it before, Eve—it’s worth the risk. I’ll be careful. Promise.”

Before Eve can protest again, I hurry out of the bathroom. I have to admit—it’s strange how fast Eve has changed her opinion. She seemed so adamant to get off the ship, but one threatening note persuades her otherwise?

Is Engineer Patel right? Do I have to worry about Eve?

I join the large crowd in the hallway, making my way toward the Lounge. Marcus walks over and we load up our trays with assorted cafeteria food. It’s always the same slop, making me miss the comfort food back home with David. God, I would kill for a juicy hamburger.

“So...did you have a good sleep last night?” Marcus asks, glancing at me. “You look tired.”

I shrug. “Could be better. It’s just this ship. It isn’t the most relaxing place.”

He follows me to our table, nodding. “Hey, I get it. Look, I wanted to apologize for what I said before. Calling you far-fetched and paranoid wasn’t right. I should know that as a medical professional.”

“Don’t worry about it, Marcus. It’s already forgotten.”

He shakes his head. “No, I mean it. I might not agree with you, but it doesn’t mean I should dismiss you like that. I meant what I said before, Jan. I want us to be together. I want it to work.”

I almost scowl. Not this again.

“Let’s meet in our quarters tonight. There won’t be anyone there,” he continues. “They all head to the Lounge at night. It’ll be nice—just you and me, alone. I think I might have some candles somewhere.”

I turn to him. “If I say yes, will you stop asking me?”

He smiles. “Yes, I promise. I’m just asking for one date. That’s all.”

I sigh, digging into my canned beans. “All right, you win. One date.”

“Wonderful. It’ll be great,” he says, smiling wider. “And don’t worry. We can take it slow. No pressure, okay?”

I’m about to agree, but I start coughing instead. I feel dizzy as the room begins to spin. I stand up, feeling like I have to vomit. I can’t catch my breath, can’t still my pounding heart.
