“What?” Through the fog swirling around her, Maggie heard someone speaking to her. She blinked and realized it was Miyoko, free of Hiro’s arm, leaning toward her.

“I said, I am so pleased to meet Imoto-san.”

Maggie tried to make sense of it. “Imoto-san?”

The woman nodded eagerly. “Hai. Araki-san says that you are his little sister. That is so sweet, I think.”

“Little sister?” Maggie tried the phrase; nothing Mrs. Takaoka sold had ever tasted as sour.

“The little sister I always wanted, but ‘little sister’ is growing up, I think.” Hiro’s hand came out, tousling Maggie’s hair. “She’ll have boyfriends soon, and then no time for her big brother, I fear.”

“No!” Her voice sounded to her the way it did in dreams. She felt herself backpedaling, drifting away, as the power of movement and the power to feel returned together. “No,” she was saying, “it’s not true. It’s not true!”

“Maggie, why are you …” she heard him call, and then she was running, as fast as she could find openings in the crowd, running without regard to the shouts of people she stepped on or bumped against, without regard to the horrible spasms in her stomach, without regard to the tears that streamed down her face as she staggered through the dark streets.
