Yacht Club Marina, Moloka‘i

* * *

The Yacht Club Marina was much smaller than Eva anticipated, and the Aggressor dwarfed the line of double-hulled ocean canoes around it. But as Eva and Sol stepped aboard, they found the vessel empty. That was strange. First no one showed up at the airport, and now no one was at the boat either?

Eva was instantly worried. She called her family, even called Thomas, but nobody answered. And her worry grew. She and Sol walked over to the yacht club to see if they knew anything, but it was closed. They then tried the small harbor’s office. It too was empty.

Eva knew her family had planned to go on a hike; maybe they just got held up? But after what had happened during the HURT 100, she couldn’t dismiss her fears that easily.

She had one other number that she could try—one she’d kept on her contact list for years but had never called. Thomas’s mother.

When she pulled up Koko Sternberg in her contacts, Sol, looking over her shoulder, said, “Why do you have Thomas’s mom’s number?”

She’d rather not explain, so Eva hit the call button.

Koko answered right away. “Hello, Eva.”

How’d she know it was me? Eva wondered. Perhaps Thomas had shared Eva’s number with his mother since they all planned to get together to look for his grandmother.

“Hello, Dr. Sternberg,” Eva said. “Soledad and I just arrived, but my family aren’t on the boat. I was just wondering if you’d heard anything from them, or from Thomas.”

“No, I haven’t heard anything. But I wouldn’t worry. They went for a hike. I’m sure they'll be back soon.”

Eva was worried, but she didn’t press the point. Talking to Koko again, even after all these years, was difficult.

With nothing else to do but wait, Eva and Sol went in search of a bathroom and some refreshment. The interior of the Aggressor was locked, so the next best option was a nearby gas station and minimart. Eva and Sol placed their drinks on the counter—Sol wanted to try a kombucha and Eva just wanted a sparkling water. The stout clerk at the cash register gave Sol a long, examining look, much like the lady who had given them a ride to the marina had.

“Aloha,” he said. “You ladies must be with my nephew Thomas.”

“Yes,” Eva said. “We just arrived. We’re here to help find his grandmother. You’re his uncle? Have you heard from him today?”

“Since you’re friends of Thomas, you can call me Uncle Mauna,” the man said. “And I saw him just this morning. My son took him and his friends out in the Hālawa Valley, to search a spot near the Moa‘ula waterfall. They should be back soon. You’re welcome to wait here.” He eyed Sol again. “Where are you ladies from?”

It was Sol who answered. “We’re Honduran, but some lady earlier today said I look like Dragon Clan. I wish I were—I would be proud to be from here. It’s a beautiful place—other than what happened in the HURT 100.
