Petty Cash for Your Mental Anguish?
(Or Depression/Psychology Studies for Big Fun & Profit)
Hello- Can I pay you to watch you be depressed once a week for $50 Dollars? All it will take is an hour of your time once a week for the next 3 months. Sure I say- Why not? As I sit and digest the gist of what the questionnaire is asking at the front desk of the Depression Clinic. I’m also thinking to myself that this is going to be great side cash. Since the girl at the front desk with the forms tells me there are no formalities involved with this study like social security numbers or anything. Yo- It’s tax free money kid!!! The little things mean a lot when you’re as broke as I am. As I sit in the lobby waiting to see the doctor a team of several office medical assistants who look like they all probably went to Devry to get their careers on track are busy working? I start wondering if maybe medical assistant might be the new career path for me at 40 years old? Then I remember- I hate the site of blood it makes me nauseous. So that might be an issue that diverts my new career path at Devry?
The 5 medical assistants rotate around the group of us- a total of 5 patients. A perfect balance of harmony for every one so that we depression study patients can get our individual personal care to get us through this time of depression (pretend & other wise). The study consists of coming to the Upper East Side location of the clinic for a 15 minute session with one of their shrinks every week. You also need to come trade in one pack of pills for a new pack every week & fill out some survey related to your sex drive once a week as well? Never mind that in the personal one on one 15 minute sessions with the various shrinks- I had stated on more than one occasion that I was presently not involved in any sexual relationships of any kind at the time (not even with myself on myself). Literally, when your worried about how to keep a roof over your head and not end up living in the streets the last thing on your list of worries is going to be something very marginal such as the reality of the issue of some fucking??? Excuse my bluntness but I emphasis this issue to indicate off the top how bizarre the premise can be for these so-called scientific studies? As if having an agenda that revolves around something other than sex is really that hard? Or maybe they are putting sexually stimulating ingredients in the pills that they’re handing out? Who knows?
The whole time I participated in this particular study except for the day right before- I would never actually take the medications. I am willing to bet that some of the pills were placebos anyway.
