Chapter Eleven
âDaughter?â I heard Natalie gasp from behind me.
âWaitâ¦â Tracey started with a frown.
âSheâs your daughter?â Daphne spoke straight to the high councilwoman, whose smile only widened.
âGirlsâ¦â I muttered quietly, and I watched Maurya shift from foot to foot with her cheeks pink and her pale-green eyes glimmering with moisture.
So, this was why the Fishfolk woman had been evasive when Iâd asked about her family?
âMother,â she said quietly as she kept her head lowered and let her sea-colored hair fall across her face to avoid looking at us.
âMy daughter,â Mauryaâs mother said evenly, and the elder Fishfolk woman clasped her hands together. âI trust you are well? Your last correspondence was a week ago, and it took you longer than I expected to return home.â
âYes, Iâm fine.â Mauryaâs voice remained quiet, and I could feel the guilt rolling off her like the waves on the ocean. âI⦠apologize for my delay. I wanted more time to gather intel, and then I ran into⦠complications when I attempted to return home.
âMauryaâ¦â When I spoke her name, the newest Wayfarerâs shoulders hunched up, and her head lowered even further. Eventually, she whirled to face us with tears streaming down her flushed cheeks.
âPlease donât think I did anything to purposefully deceive you.â Her voice shook as she spoke. âHunter, I still want⦠I mean, we⦠Iâm sorry.â
âCouncilmembers, my daughter has returned.â Mauryaâs mother spoke over her daughterâs stammering voice. âWhat can you tell us of the Sunfolk, Maurya?â
My Fishfolk lover turned her back on us again and faced her mother, only this time she held her head up high and swallowed back her quiet sobs. Then she cleared her throat, and when she spoke once more, her voice was more or less steady.
âEsteemed councilmembersâ¦â she said as she addressed the chamber. âAs you know, I am currently undertaking regal training in order to prepare myself to assume the role of High Council Leader upon my motherâs death. When Lady Everfinn passes this role onto me, I intend to be prepared.â
âSheâs a Lady?â Tracey whispered to me, and I shushed her so we could listen to Mauryaâs speech.
âAnd what have you learned, my dear daughter?â Lady Everfinn asked, and her commanding voice echoed throughout the mighty High Council inner chamber.
âUnfortunately⦠tensions still remain high between Fishfolk and Sunfolk,â Maurya announced with a sad sigh. âBoth on the surface and beneath.â
âThat much we already know,â Lady Everfinn agreed as her expression turned grim.
âI brought these Sunfolk to you,â Maurya continued and glanced over her shoulder to me, and she met my eyes with a soft expression. âHowever, they are, in fact, not even Sunfolk themselves, but I implore the members of the High Council to listen to what they have to say.â
The High Council members remained silent, and even Lady Everfinn raised a sharp eyebrow at her daughterâs suggestion.
Then I took a slight step forward to stand beside my newest mate, and I looked down at her with a tiny smile.
